Favorite Subject

Conversation with Brecken this morning.

Me: Are you still liking school, Boo?
B: Yeah.
Me: What's your favorite thing about school?
B: Recess.
Me: What's your favorite subject?
B: Huh?
Me: Ya know, what's your favorite thing to learn about? Reading? Math?
B: Jesus.

May this always be the truth :)

6!

Last week, I was tucking Brecken in at bedtime & I said, "I better have another hug. I only get to hug my 5 year old for 5 more nights." I then went over to tuck Leighton in & heard Brecken sniffling. When asked what was wrong, his reply was, "How come you will only give me hugs for 5 more nights?" I quickly explained that I would THEN be hugging my 6 year old, not my 5 year old anymore. He sighed with relief & said,"Oh, ok!"

Don't blink...is so true. 6 years have gone by more quickly than I could have ever imagined. Love this big boy!

Eat them up...

Last year, we worked hard at getting the boys to correctly say K-S-U...many times it came out as K-U-S...or just K-U...which, quite honestly, was painful. This year, they have it mastered.

Thankfully, Zoe caught on a little earlier than the boys did...she frequently goes through the house doing her Wildcat cheer.

Strong woman competition...

This...

went to this...in a matter of seconds.

The peanut lifted 75% of her weight...and in true 'Strong Man' form, she just dropped the weight after she 'got' the lift.

It's a good thing mommy is as quick with a catch as she is with the camera...or poor Soph would have had a nice fall.

Zoe's got a gun...

As we were getting ready for bed, I heard one of the boys guns 'firing'...I went to investigate & found Zoe like this...

I asked her what she was doing...

Her reply, "Dere's a moth up dere..."

I feel safe knowing she's going to protect us even from moth invaders...

Breaking News!

This girl officially hit 20lbs last month. Hurrah!

And after a night at home with daddy...this girl decided a bottle isn't too bad! She threw a fit for mom & the bottle...but decided a sippy cup was ok. Score!

Thoughts at the Bottom of the Beanstalk...

This is how this momma is feeling today...as today is the first day of kindergarten for Brecken...

Once upon a time there was a little boy named Jack who was about to climb his very first beanstalk. He had a fresh haircut and a brand-new book bag.

Even though his friends in the neighborhood had climbed this same beanstalk almost every day last year, this was Jack's first day and he was a little nervous. So was his mother.

Early in the morning she brought him to the foot of the beanstalk. She talked encouragingly to Jack about all the fun he would have that day and how nice his giant would be. She reassured him that she would be back to pick him up at the end of the day. For a moment they stood together, silently holding hands, gazing up at the beanstalk. To Jack it seemed much bigger than it had when his mother had pointed it out on the way to the store last week. His mother thought it looked big, too. She swallowed. Maybe she should have held Jack out a year...

Jack's mother straightened his shirt one last time, patted his shoulder and smiled down at him. She promised to stay and wave while he started climbing. Jack didn't say a word.

He walked forward, grabbed a low-growing stem and slowly pulled himself up to the first leaf. He balanced there for a moment and then climbed more eagerly to the second leaf, then to the third and soon he had vanished into a high tangle of leaves and stems with never a backward glance at his mother.

She stood alone at the bottom of the beanstalk, gazing up at the spot where Jack had disappeared. There was no rustle, no movement, no sound to indicate that he was anywhere inside.

"Sometimes," she thought, "it's harder to be the one who waves good-bye than it is to be the one who climbs the beanstalk."

She wondered how Jack would do. Would he miss her? How would he behave? Did his giant understand that little boys sometimes acted silly when they felt unsure? She fought down an urge to spring up the stalk after Jack and maybe duck behind a bean to take a peek at how he was doing.

"I'd better not. What if he saw me?" She knew Jack was really old enough to handle this on his own. She reminded herself that, after all this was thought to be an excellent beanstalk and that everyone said his giant was not only kind but had outstanding qualifications.

"It's not so much that I'm worried about him," she thought, rubbing the back of her neck. "It's just that he's growing up and I'm going to miss him."

Jack's mother turned to leave. "Jack's going to have lots of bigger beanstalks to climb in his life," she told herself.

"Today's the day he starts practicing for them...

And today's the day I start practicing something too: Cheering him on and waving good-bye."

New/Old Pajamas

My mom saved some of my clothes from when I was little...these are a pair of my jammies when I was little. Zoe was excited to wear them for bedtime. She would say, "Look at my pretty jammies, daddy!" I know there is a picture of me in these...I will have to look for it!

6 months!

I turned 6 months old yesterday.

Mommy says I'm getting too big, too fast! At my appointment this morning I was 26.25 inches long (70th) and 14lbs 12oz (24th). Head circumference was 40.4cm (5%). So in true family fashion...long, skinny & a small melon.

I roll both ways & scoot along on my back to get where I want to go. Sometimes my scooting gets me in trouble & I get stuck in the corner or up against a wall. This makes me angry.

I'm a happy girl & pretty laid back most of the time. I like chewing on everything. Mommy thinks I may be working on teeth. She blames my night time awakenings on them...but I really just like to see her. She says 4 times a night is excessive, but I don't think so...

I like my rice cereal & oatmeal. Applesauce made my lips pucker up & my toes curl, but mommy keeps feeding it to me. I hear that peaches & beans are in my near future, whatever those are.

Happy 1/2 birthday to me!

Colorado

We spent a heavenly 6 days in Colorado last week (ok, almost heavenly...the whining, fighting, etc did accompany us...we are normal, hehe) We had a great time & look forward to going back in the future!

Day 1 - Garden of the Gods

Celebrating daddy's birthday with ice cream cake, yum!

Day 2 - The Royal Gorge

I think they should outlaw vehicles on it...I didn't care for them driving by me while I was walking :)

The incline ride...we are at the bottom looking up at where we started from. I will say that the thought of the wires breaking did cross my mind several times as we were moving.

In front of the Kansas flag.

Day 3 - Cheyenne Mountain Zoo & Focus on the Family

Focus on the family playroom - they also had a 3 story slide. The giggles I heard the first time they went down were priceless! We spent a lot of time playing there.

Day 4 - Church at Flying W Ranch & fishing/playing at the park

Day 5 - Papa & Mama showed up - a fun surprise for the kids (and us). We were able to go hiking up the mountain with the boys, while the girls napped with Papa & Mama!

Day 6 - Hiking, "Creeking" & Playing!
